On a recent appearance on Get Up Mornings, PJ Morton, the renowned producer, artist, and now author, opened up about his journey from gospel music to mainstream success with Maroon 5 and his latest project, his memoir Saturday Night Sunday Morning. During the conversation with Erica Campbell, Morton explained the meaning behind the book’s title, sharing that it reflects the “dichotomy” of his life. He described growing up as a preacher’s kid, starting his career in gospel music, and later branching out into secular music. The title captures this contrast, symbolizing both his spiritual upbringing and his career in the broader music industry.

Morton also shared that writing the memoir was an emotional journey, as it forced him to open up about his personal life, something he’s not accustomed to doing. “This memoir really was me opening up to my whole life, which is something I don’t do. I like to talk through the music,” he admitted. He discussed his struggles with understanding his place within the church and music, and how he navigated his career, which included pivotal moments such as his mentor relationship with Warren Campbell.

A major highlight of the conversation was Morton’s reflection on the incredible support he received from his father, which he credited for giving him the confidence to pursue his dreams. “If my dad didn’t approve, I might have never gotten here,” Morton said, noting that his father’s spiritual guidance played a major role in his career. This relationship, in contrast to many stories where parents disapprove of their children venturing into secular music, empowered Morton and gave him the strength to continue.
