Authorities on the Oregon coast are sending a warning about very dangerous high tides this weekend that are often referred to as king tides.

“Please watch these high tides from a distance. Look for locations well above the action and away from cliff edges,” wrote the Cannon Beach Police Department. “Don’t let the parking lot fool you. Just because it seems relatively safe, it doesn’t mean the nearby trails and beaches are safe. Avoid being on the beach during a storm or king tides. Jetties are not a safe place to watch.”

A King Tide is a popular, non-scientific term people often use to describe exceptionally high tides, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Higher than normal tides usually happen during a new or full moon and when the Moon is at its perigee, or during specific seasons around the country.
